Artist Jungye, Nam KOREA

Jung Ye Nam’s folk paintings are not realistic; they are abstract and even spiritual, unmasking the nature of things both tangible and elusive. A French philosopher once alluded that the universe discloses its mysterious appearance only to one who loves and stares at it. Through a process of meditating to understand the nature of the world, she enters a heads pace in which she obtains inspiration for her mystic creations. Her folk painting synthesizes the austere and simple beauty of Joseon’s folk painting with the elegant, refined aesthetic sense of royal decoration. Her works have served as a model for many artists who find themselves on the boundary between modern and traditional styles.

I am artist jung ye Nam. I paint traditional Korean color painting in a modern fashion. My paintings mainly feature natural objects such as flowers like peonies, lotuses, and chrysanthemums as well as trees and birds. I also portray diverse scenes from spring, summer, autumn, and winter as well as piles of books and letters which is called folk painting. Korean color painting was once loved by many for its arresting and appealing artistic qualities after a French ambassador to Korea collected such works 150 years ago. People have been riveted by its pared down images and clear, exquisite hues. Enthusiastic about this painting genre, Koreans used to decorate their life surroundings with images of flowers and birds.

This genre of painting is particularly marked by images representing our wishes for wealth, honor, longevity, and fecundity. They are like symbols of good luck. I have put a lot of effort into helping Korean color painting become favored and loved by people around the world.
