Contemplation and Meditation- Joy of Solitude

1. The world of metaphor in animal paintings
Animals have been used as key materials to express human beings' subtle sentiments throughout art history. For example, the images of horses have represented a desire for a good and wise king and his long, stable reign. Also, cows have been depicted to practice asceticism in the hope of reaching spiritual and religious realm. Among animals, cats and dogs, the closest creatures to humans, have been selected to metaphorically express and expose human beings' nature. In fact, they are important materials for Yeongmohwa, which refers to Korean animal-and-bird painting and was established as a genre in the middle period of Joseon Dynasty.
Jeong Hunchil's puppy paintings are in succession of classical context and look deep into the world of ordinary people. Mr.Jeong has brought every hair of the animals to life and his elastic, vivid straight lines display contrast and volume all at once. As shown in his previous works, such finest works are the fruit of the artist's fascination in the content and techniques of animal paintings of late Joseon Dynasty.
In the Jeong Hunchil's latest animal paintings, variations on feelings like joy, sorrow and fear have been intensified. While in the past works, using outer drawing lines like the puppy's hair, Jeong aspired toward perfect expression of external world and ego, he is now focusing on listening to the inner voice of human-like animals. In fact, what the inner voice says is translated into what the artist is now experiencing inside. The artist's brush has traveled from outward to inward, allowing people to contemplate the object and confront the landscape of humans' essential inner side. You cannot help but notice the changes in his brushwork from mostly dealing with lines to sides. In this regard, we can read Mr. Jeong's intention that he tries to shift the meaning of the relationships between the object and space, and their arrangement.
As you see in his works like <Joy of Solitude>, <Companion> and <Coexistence>, Jeong Hunchil portrays the real world of his own and interrelationship between himself and dogs. It is about proven authentic relationship, and reflection on building long-lasting relationships not a one-off one. Jeong has revealed his internal conflicts and pleasure straightforwardly through the changes of dog's eyes. Perhaps the artist hopes to continuously be understood with an image of pure puppies. When we appreciate his naive drawing, his selecting materials like sapsal dogs, Korean traditional dogs, and his management of clear space, we feel that the artist has put his attitude toward life and his soul in his works. All these come not only from historical context of animal paintings, but from the artist's effort in changing the content and modern interpretation.
2. Modern interpretation of Joy of Solitude and Joy of Transcendence
The dramatic expression of feelings displayed in Jeong Hunchil's recent works like <Dogfight> possibly is a direct projection of where the artist exists. This is the surroundings of Mr. Jeong and the scenery of reality which modern humankind should go through. His recent works are the collection of Jeong's expanded awareness and endeavor to present actual images of human life. And, they are his outspoken confession about what the artist has experienced.
In this process Mr. Jeong puts emphasis on the theme- Joy of Solitude. You can detect the artist's mature poetic and emotional expression and his serious consideration on how to use his brush to fully convey his meaning.
A famous politician of Song Dynasty, China(Sama Gang,司馬光) recited a poem in his book(獨樂園記). The bright moon timely arises and fresh air naturally blows....I come to absorb my surroundings with my own body. It feels so wide and nothing can keep me from wandering around freely. I am certain that nothing like as good as this. So, now I name it Joy of Solitude. (明月時至 淸風自來... 耳目肺腸 卷爲己有 踽踽焉 洋洋焉 不知天壤之間 復有何樂 可以代此也 因合而命之曰獨樂)
Joy of Solitude means to introspect oneself in the silence and forget about gains and losses. That is, the external objects and ego constitute a harmonious whole and thus people can reach joy of transcendence(Chuang-tzu, China). This is maybe about what the artist dreams of. Mr. Jeong wants to contemplate the human beings' world, and through images of animals playing with flowers and butterflies presents an ideal life style.
Jeong Hunchil has extended the scope of expression through animal paintings ranging from the trauma of troubled people to an ideal life model. In fact, joy of solitude- the theme of his paintings and content of his life - let us witness the moment when classic encounters a modern ego. In this regard, Jeong's joy of solitude is associated with Chuang-tzu's joy of transcendence.
Mr.Jeong is considered a rare artist for his fine brushwork. His lines are bold but delicate at the same time, which makes his works well compared to bird and flower paintings of Northern Son Dynasty, China. It's very expected to see in the future how the artist should develop his drastic but exquisite beauty of lines.
Of course, there are things to be dealt with further. It is true that there is room for improvement in composition and usage of high-purity colors. Also, there is need for deep consideration on how to project a variety of aspects of human beings onto a canvas with mere images of animals. All these require profound literary sensibility and broad experiences. Different approaches sometimes lead to creativity; images of mythical or religious characters can be borrowed; it is helpful to explore the relationship between animal paintings and modern culture.
There is high expectation of his modern approach to animal paintings. That is partially because of nostalgia about balanced beauty of classic which has been long lost, and because of need for intimate feelings in such an alien, cynical modern world. So, Joeng's paintings are warm and soft.(2013. 2)
