Young-Hee Lee's artistic world reveals
her long and steady process of searching for the Korean identity through her
renditions of traditional colors and figures. Her coloration - an amalgam of
her own colors created from various natural raw materials - has vestiges of
traditional colors and envokes a juxtaposition between the historic nature of
colors and the Korean identity.
She provides various renditions of Obangsaek
(Five Basic Colors) and Obansaek (Five Related Colors)seeking to establish her
position and raise her stature in the contemporary Korean arts. Her diversified
applications of these concepts provoke certain tensions between artistic
localism and globalism and have been gaining traction.
The repetition and accumulation of her colors in her artistic space draw
relation to that of the universe, an endless repetition of circles symbolizing
the great universe. Symbolism or not though, her concise and geometric figures
provide certain values that continue to build upon the Korean people's
collective memories of olden times.
